The meanings of family, social relationships and neighbourhood have commonly been examined in relation to women; less has been written about their place in the lives of working-class men. This article examines such meanings through diaries, letters and material mementos, the family archive of a working-class man, my father, who was born in 1919 and died in 1997, and who spent most of his life in the East Midlands town of Northampton. These family papers and mementos are placed in a broader context of class, gender and urban life to suggest the intricate and changing meanings of family and locality. They tell a story which illustrates the shaping effects of class-based attitudes and behaviours upon an imagined landscape of family and place and the complex intersection of public and private, memory and culture, particularly between my father’s adolescence in the 1930s and the 1970s. They suggest how a place-bound sense of belonging, set during childhood and youth, assumed new meanings as Northampton changed with expansion and redevelopment as a ‘new town’ in the 1970s and illustrate how traditional working-class attitudes and behaviours changed more slowly and unevenly in the post-war years than is often argued.
