Assesses published studies of the frequency and nature of stressful life events reported by schizophrenic patients, diagnosed according to specified criteria, in comparison with those reported by members of control groups. Methodological problems that are particularly relevant to the study of life events and schizophrenia are also considered. Three study designs are identified: comparisons of schizophrenic with other psychiatric patients, of schizophrenics with normals, and of relapsed with nonrelapsed schizophrenics. No study found more events reported by schizophrenics than by other patient groups. Findings are inconsistent regarding event frequencies reported by schizophrenics and normals. More events were reported by relapsed than by nonrelapsed schizophrenics. Overall, the research evidence indicates a weaker relationship between life events and schizophrenia onset than the clinical literature suggests, although methodological limitations preclude firm conclusions at this time.(31 ref)(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
