The development and analytical performance of a new potentlometric pC02 (partial pressure of C02) sensing catheter Is described. A uniquesensor geometry Is achieved by utilizing an Inner tubular polymer pH electrode In conjunction with an outer gas-permeable silicone rubber tube. Once as-sembled, this flexible catheter has an outer diameter of 1.1 mm. When filled with an appropriate reference solution and Internal electrolyte, the resulting device responds rapidly (< 80 s for fogs) and reproduclbly to pC02 changes In the normal and abnormal physiological concentration range (15-150 torr) with nearly Nemstlan behavior (54-81 mV/decade change In pC02). Long-term stability of the Inner pH electrode and consequently the gas sensor Is dependent on the Internal reference solution composition. Favorable stability (±2 mV over 45 h) Is achieved with a phosphate buffered Internal reference solution. Continuous pC02 values obtained with the new sensor during 6-h In vitro blood pump studies correlate well with conventional blood-gas Instruments. Preliminary results for sensors Implanted Intravascularly In a dog demonstrate their suitability for continuous In vivo monitoring of
