Groups of rats were injd. intraperit. with 0.9% NaCl, rat, bovine, human, rabbit and guinea-pig heparinized plasma and soln. of crystalline bovine albumin. The protein was tagged with T-1824 in most expts. The dose of fluid was 20 ml./kg. The rat plasma is slightly more rapidly absorbed than is 0.9% NaCl. Fresh heterologous plasmas produce an initial reaction causing an increase in the volume of fluid placed in the peritoneal cavity for the 1st 3-8 hrs. and then the rate of absorption increases and may be completely absorbed at the end of 16 hrs. Solns. of crystalline bovine albumin or stored heterologous plasmas are rapidly absorbed without any initial reaction. Alter placement of these fluids into the peritoneal cavity, the concn. of protein tended to reach an equilibrium, presumably with the protein in the tissue fluid of the peritoneum. With rabbit or bovine plasma but not with rat plasma, pleural fluid appeared during absorption. This was considered as due to escape from lymphatics.
