The findings relating to mortality during a short heat wave in New York City, USA in Aug. 1975, are described. The very great majority of those who died, who would not have died if there were no heat wave, were elderly people of both sexes and irrespective of color who had underlying organic disease. Ischemic heart disease was the most prominent cause of excess deaths. Prophylactic measures to reduce mortality in future heat waves are discussed.
