The short lifespan and ever-growing demand for lithium-ion batteries, containing cobalt and lithium, are the key factors for their recycling. In this study, spent laptop batteries were discharged, crushed in an attritor mill and sieved. The active material consists of LiCoO2and graphite at around 59% and 41%, respectively. The active mass was reduced in a microwave and muffle furnace at different time intervals and was further leached in distilled water, and the leach residue was magnetically separated. The obtained magnetic fraction contained cobalt, whereas graphite and lithium carbonate reports to the nonmagnetic and dried solution. The reduction kinetics was studied in a muffle furnace using different models which yielded an activation energy of 31.46 kJ/mol. The magnetic fraction of the microwave route consisted of both Co and CoO compared with cobalt phase in a muffle furnace. Muffle furnace reduction was found better than the microwave route in terms of product purity and process yield.
