Type 1. Hyperglycaemia in the ewe. Injection of glucose into pregnant ewes in doses of 2 g/kg body wt. causes characteristic changes in the maternal and foetal sugar levels which are illustrated in Fig. 1. The points in this graph represent the mean of four such experiments by Huggett et al.(Data supplied by private communication.)During the intravenous injection the maternal blood glucose level probably rises to between 700 and 800 mg/100 ml. but falls off over the subsequent 3 hr. The foetal glucose rises steeply during the first half-hour to about 200 mg/100 ml. and then starts to decline, while the foetal fructose shows a steady and more prolonged rise.
