An histological and cytological study has been made of the development of the chorio-allantoic placenta of the albino rat. The findings contradict Duval (1891) on several important points, and partially corroborate Jenkinson (''02). The uteri described in the preceding paper (Bridgman, ''48) were studied. Additional implantation sites were fixed in Champy''s fluid to demonstrate mitochondria and Golgi bodies. Mitochondrial stains demonstrate peculiar long fibrillae in the giant cells. Mitochondria seem longer than those previously described, except in the labyrinthine syncytium, where they appear as minute granules between the fat drops along the margin of the fetal blood vessels. The Golgi material of the trophoblast had not been previously described. In giant cells and other large trophoblast cells it forms one or several basketworks around the nucleus. In the labyrinthine syncytium it consists of short rods bordering the maternal blood sinuses. The possible significance of this configuration, in conjunction with the distribution of syncytial mitochondria and fat, was discussed. The question of glycogen uptake and distribution was discussed. The most controversial observations were that the glycogen cells of the junctional zone are of fetal origin, representing original ectoplacental cells; and that there is a fetal endovascular "plasmodium" which migrates up the maternal arteries mesometrially to the junctional zone. It was also shown that the cytoplasm of the labyrinthine syncytium persists until term.
