The clinical history and autopsy findings are reported of a 15-month-old male with mental retardation and hydrocephalus. Histologic examinations were made of the central nervous system of sections stained by Mallory''s phosphotungstic acid hematoxylin, Alzheimer''s acid fuchsin light green method, Van Gieson, Spielmeyer myelin sheath stain and by Hortega''s silver carbonate. The author found large numbers of fuchsinophil bodies in the white matter and beneath both the epenclyma and pia, but sparing the cortex. These bodies were predominantly perivascular. Evidence is presented to show these bodies are the result of fibrinoid degeneration in the fibers and cell bodies of the fibrillar neuroglia.
