The amount of genetically modified RoundUp Ready (TM) soya in admixture samples was determined using a method, quantitation using informative zeros that employs most probable number statistics to estimate molecule numbers. By measuring the numbers of lectin, acting as a reference marker, and GMO-specific targets within these samples, we were able to determine their GMO contents. Estimates derived from QUIZ were comparable with results obtained using conventional real-time Taqman (R) PCR. Results of GMO content determination using QUIZ is based on a 'per genome' units and estimations can be obtained using very small amounts of DNA. Certified reference materials, constructed using weight measurements, were not required for quantification. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
