Formidable quantities of microbial metabolites belonging to the class ofionophoresare currently being fed to poultry and cattle raised for human consumption. Most fryers and broilers in the United States received 120 ppm monensin in their feed to control coccidiosisl while beef cattle are fed 30 ppm monensin which, possibly by exerting a favorable effect on the flora of the rumen,2promotes a more efficient fermentation of cellulose and subsequent conversion of feed to meat.3
