The levels of ovalbumin mRNA sequence in nonoviduct tissues of the chicken were examined in nuclear and cytoplasmic fractions of hen liver, spleen, estrogen-stimulated chick liver, and 10-day-old embryo using RNA-cDNA hybridization. In general, the tissues studied revealed little or no detectable ovalbumin RNA, at the limit of detection of some 10−5% of total RNA. The results suggest that the ovalbumin gene is either transcriptionally inactive or transcribed only very infrequently in nonoviduct tissues, and that the different target tissue responses of liver and oviduct to estrogen stimulation resides largely in the control of transcription.
