EM radioautography was used in an attempt to identify any relationship between the location and degree of differentiation of progenitor cells in the [mouse] periodontal ligament (PDL). Ligament fibroblasts were classified on the basis of their nuclear/cytoplasmic ratio and their distance to the closest blood vessel measured. In undifferentiated paravascular progenitor cell population exists, and the PDL also contains progenitor cells showing a range of cytodifferentiation.
