Aerobic glycolysis accounted for 30% of the glucose taken up by chick embryo cells. Less than 10% was directly oxidized via the pentose cycle. The latter pathway was not a significant source of ribose for ribonucleic acid synthesis. Within 1.5 hours of infection, when complement-fixing antigen first appeared, aerobic glycolysis was increased 50-100%. After 3 hours, when hemagglutinin appeared, the direct oxidation of glucose via the pentose cycle increased by 30-50%. The rate of glycolysis was limited by the supply of phosphate and phosphate-acceptor; triphospho-pyridine nucleotide was a rate-limiting factor in the direct oxidation of glucose. Following infection these materials may be released in the cell as a consequence of reactions associated with virus synthesis.
