Partially purified forms of N-acetylglucosaminyltransferases I and II were used, in sequence, to preparatively convert the readily available synthetic 6-deoxy-α-D-Man(1→3)[6-deoxy-α-D-Man(1→6)]β-D-Man-O(CH2)2COOMe to a dideoxy-analog of the pentasaccharide core common to all complex N-linked oligosaccharides.
