A genetic approach to investigation of the Drosophila olfactory system, based on the use of mutations affecting antennal morphology, is discussed We describe a convenient means of screening for mutants with antennal defects, and we describe the isolation of three such mutants. A new X-linked recessive mutant, eab (extra antennal bristles), is found to exhibit characteristics suggestive of a homeotic transformation of antennae towards legs.
