Five siphonaceous green seaweeds, Caulerpa chemnitzia (Esper) Lamour., C. faridii Nizam., C. manorensis Nizam., C. racemosa (Forssk.) J. Ag., and C. taxifolia (Vahl) C. Ag. were collected from the coastal waters near Karachi (Pakistan) and air-dried in the shade at 25 °C for one month. Each species was extracted for four weeks at the same temperature and analyzed for fatty acid, sterol and diterpene constituents using gasliquid chromatography (GLC), electron impact (EI-), fast atom bombardement (FAB-), field desorption (FD-), gas chromatography (GC-), high resolution (HR-) and infrared (IR-) mass spectrometry (-MS) as well as nuclear magnetic resonance ('Hand C-NMR) spectroscopy. Altogether 36 acids /. e. 18 saturated and 18 unsaturated fatty acids including 13 monoenoic, 3 dienoic and 2 trienoic acids were identified as methyl esters. Unsaturated fatty acids were present in a greater quantity (52-74%) than saturated acids (26-48%). Palmitic and myristoleic acids were found as major fatty acids, oleic acid was present in high amounts (8-16.5%) in some of them and gadoleic acid at very high levels (26%) in one species; longer-chain and Ci6 polyunsaturated fatty acids were not detected. Five different sterols have been identified, cholesterol appeared to be the most abundant one and was the only sterol in four Caulerpa species, except C. faridii. Sterols of the cholesta-skeleton appear to be characteristic of the genus Caulerpa. Two diterpenoids have also been isolated from three species, both being acyclic diterpene alcohols. They are being reported for the first time from any species of Caulerpa. The five species of Caulerpa differed from one another phycochemically in many different aspects.
