ObjectivePrevention of healthcare-associated infections remains a significant challenge. Education and training of healthcare workers (HCW) is fundamental to HAI prevention but innovative approaches to training HCW to think from a systems perspective are needed.MethodsWe present a commentary to illustrate how an online simulation focusing on the cognitive aspects of HAI prevention may be applied to HAI prevention.ResultsOnline cognitive simulation offers several advantages to complement conventional procedural training for HAI prevention. An online simulation can (a) be scaffolded to support specific learning objectives and performance outcomes;(b) enable HCWs to consider a complex problem from a different perspective, such as that of a hospital administrator, helping them better understand the systemic aspects of the problem;(c) incorporate large numbers of HCWs, who can collaborate even across institutional or geographic barriers; and (d) collect rich data on participant performance, making detailed assessment of learning, attitudes, and practices possible.
