The role that material properties play in determining wear behaviour is still ill defined. In wear theory hardness remains the term most commonly used to express the relation between material properties and wear rates although it has often been shown to be inadequate for this purpose, particularly when dissimilar materials are under consideration.A programme of work has been initiated with the aim of establishing a more suitable material property term for use in the wear life prediction of a wide range of steels. In this first investigation the relation between the wear behaviour and some basic material properties of fourteen C-Mn-Si pearlitic steels have been studied. The severe wear characteristics of these steels were determined with a pin-ring wear testing machine using air jet cooling to allow pin loads of up to 200 kgf to be employed without excessive pin heating. It was found that wear rates can be related to a chemical composition term (C+Mn/4.75 +Si/10)wt.%, to a microstructural term, the mean ferrite path, and to the strength parameters derived from both monotonic and cyclic stress-strain curves.
