Human saliva seeded withH. pyloriwas incubated in urea-HCl and then cultured on nonselective media. Pretreatment with 0.06 N HCl–0.08 M urea for 5 min at 37°C resulted in reproducible isolation ofH. pylori, even at low inocula (≤102CFU/ml of saliva), despite the presence of large numbers of contaminating organisms.
