Inhalational Challenge Tests and the Progression of Asthma It has been suggested that the events which follow allergen inhalation, and perhaps other stimuli such as exercise, in susceptible asthmatic subjects might be divided into 3 main phases (figure 1). These have been termed (7) rapid, spasmogenic;(2) late, sustained; and (3) a subacute/chronic inflammatory phase.The phases might act in sequence after the initial release of mast cell-derived agents. The increase in airways resistance that follows bronchial challenge with common environmental allergens such as extracts of grass pollen or the house dust mite is rapid in onset with a peak fall in the forced expiratory volume in one second (FEVO occurring between 10 and 20 min (rapid, spasmogenic phase).
