This essay explores the occasion and purposes of the composition of Richard Baxter's autobiographical papers between 1664 and 1685 and of their posthumous publication in 1696 asReliquiae Baxterianae. It situates theReliquiaein the context of political and religious controversy and its bearing on the practice of history writing in the Restoration period (and of memoirs in particular), and it comments on the editorial procedures of Matthew Sylvester and Edmund Calamy in preparing theReliquiaefor the press. TheReliquiaeis immensely important for the history of subjectivity and for our understanding of Baxter himself, but this paper suggests ways of understanding its import not as autobiography but as a publishing and cultural event. It argues that in the late seventeenth‐century's contest over the meaning of the recent past defining characteristics of modernity can be seen emerging.
