To incorporate daytime alertness as a fundamental part of the evaluation of insomnia and its treatment, levels of sleepiness and alertness must be measured objectively and quantitatively. This methodological challenge has been overcome with the development of the Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT). The present papar describes this approach, documents its evaluation, and presents examples of its application to the evaluation of benzodiazepine hypnotics. Data indicate that the MSLT offers the most reliable and sensitive approach to the assessment of changes in daytime alertness associated with a wide variety of experimental manipulations. The MSLT appears to be sensitive to very small changes in total sleep time, motivational and practice effects appear to be minimal, and the measure can be applied to both patients and nonpatients. It is concluded that measurement of the dimension of daytime alertness/sleepiness should be a major part of the diagnosis and treatment of patients with acute and chronic insomnia.(24 ref)(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2017 APA, all rights reserved)
