The experience of illness and injury includes a myriad of emotional responses from which many behavioral concepts have been identified. Although researchers have identified and examined these concepts separately, few models have described how these paradoxical concepts coexist. For instance, responses include the contrasting ideas of hope and despair and the emotionless state of enduring with the motion-laden state of suffering-seemingly incompatible concepts that have not yet been linked theoretically.Hope: Morse and Doberneck (1995) employed advanced techniques of concept analysis described by Morse (1995) to develop the concept of hope. Unlike concept analysis techniques using hypothetical cases, Morse delineates a qualitative method through which poorly developed concepts are refined using data (actual cases). This method involves three steps: identifying the attributes of the concept, verifying the attributes, and identifying manifestations of the concept. A cardinal underlying rule is that the identified components or attributes must be present in every ase in which the concept is manifest.
