Objective To investigate the characteristic of glucose transport in tissue after hypoxia acclimatization. Methods After Wistar rats were exposed to hypobaric hypoxia simulating an altitude of 5 000 m for 30 d, determination of the blood gas, blood sugar and routine blood examination were conducted; the glucose level, the glucose uptake rate, the binding sites, and the affinity of glucose transporters in skeletal muscle were also determined. Indices in the hypoxic group were compared with those in the control group (sea level group). Results The blood sugar level in the hypoxic group was significantly higher than that in the control group ( P 0 05). The glucose level, the uptake rate, and the number of binding sites in skeletal muscle after hypoxia acclimatization were also significantly higher than those in sea level group. Conclusion The enhanced ability of glucose uptake after hypoxia acclimatization may be one of the mechanisms of utilizing glucose preferentially during hypoxic exposure.
