Lithium filaments can grow in solid electrolytes and cause short circuits and decreases in Coulombic efficiencies. In the April issue ofMatter, Kazyak et al. demonstrate anoperandotechnique that is capable of exploring the nature of lithium nucleation and growth at solid electrolyte interfaces. Optical techniques reveal the various growth pathways for lithium filaments and shed light on the electro-chemo-mechanical phenomena that govern Li-SE interfaces.
