In the reaction between dichlorodimethylsilane and sodium potassium bismuthide, which was prepared from the elements in dimethoxyethane, the previously unknown cage Bi2(SiMe2)5 is formed. It was isolated by crystallization from heptane, and its molecular structure was confirmed by X-ray analysis.
