The solvent extraction of alkaline-earth and some bivalent transition metal ions such as Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+and Cd2+with the bidentate phosphine oxide compound, bis(diphenylphosphinyl)-methane (BDPPM), and perchlorate into 1,2-dichloroethane has been investigated. When benzene is used as the solvent, the complexes consisting of metal ion, BDPPM and perchlorate are not extracted but are precipitated at the liquid-liquid interface. The precipitates have been isolated and their compositions determined.
