A high-voltage oscillatory spark discharge between an aluminum-base alloy and graphite counter electrode is described in detail withthe aid of time-resolved emission spectrometry. With emphasis on controlling the sen-sitivity obtainable from the spark, the types and causes of ion and atom emission are shown in four critical stages of discharge lifetime at various regions across the gap. The initial breakdown of the spark, followed by electrode sampling andthe propagation of electrode material across the gap is shown to be critical in determining the type andintensity of line and background emission. Background emission is discussed, along with methods for increasing the signal-to-noise ratios observed in the aluminum system. By a simple modification of the spark source, it is possible to achieve line-to-background ratios in excess of those observed from a typical direct-current arc for selected elements in certain regions of the spark gap.
