Several laboratories have reported a rise in plasma concentrations of insulin and human growth hormone (HGH) following the administration of amino acids (1–3). During the course of experience with subjects who were given infusions of arginine, we observed that female subjects showed a greater rise in serum insulin and in serum HGH than did males of a comparable age. These differences between male and female subjects after amino acid infusion, and the ability of stilbestrol pretreatment (as diethylstilbestrol) to augment HGH, but not insulin, responsiveness in the male, form the basis of this report.
