A review is made of the behaviour of graphite subjected to irradiation in nuclear reactors with particular emphasis on the dimensional changes of graphite crystallites and their relationship to the macroscopic dimensional changes of polycrystalline graphites. The theory of the formation of the lattice defects responsible for these changes is examined and deficiencies in present knowledge highlighted.
