Expert groups play a major role in environmental management. Thus, professional activity in such areas as research, impact assessment and policy development involves working groups of one kind or another. However, the available evidence suggests that expert groups often suffer from debilitating internal problems which make it difficult to achieve effective collaboration. As a consequence, involvement in working groups can be both an exasperating and unproductive experience. In this paper, the problems that arise in working groups are explored, and a model of group processes is developed that helps to integrate the scattered literature on group experiences in environmental management and research. Wherever possible, suggestions are made of ways in which professional collaboration might be improved. 82 references, 1 figure, 1 table.
