#{149}s issue of Radiology contains two artides that report on investigations of the diagnostic utility of thin-slab reconstructions (1,2). We see these techniques as a small yet important subset of a new paradigm of image-guided diagnosis that exploits the volumetric nature of modern computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imagers. The purpose of this editorial is to help fit the work of these investigators into the context of recent trends in volumetric imaging and to discuss an alternative approach for volumetric image diagnosis and the means to achieve it.
