A new antibiotic from a species of Streptomyces (326) was isolated from the culture medium in form of a highly viscous, brown evaporation residue, which was active up to 1:200,000 aganist Staphylococcus aureus. The chromatographical adsorption failed initially, but was very successful after distribution between 90% methanol and petroleum ether. The best fraction obtained was antibiotically active against S. aureus up to 1:1,000,000. Chromatography with fluorescent AlOH2 showed a constant, well defined zone, which corresponds with the antibiotic. Further purification was obtained by transmission of the basic substance into acid solvents. Slow evaporation of the ether fraction led to the first crystals of the substance. The N-free degradation product of mild alkaline hydrolysis has an empirical formula of C20H30O5.
