Scrambled genes were discovered in the late 80‘s in David Prescott's lab; since then, scrambled genes in stichotrichous ciliates have been puzzling biologists and computer scientists as a complex computational problem solved by living cells. Inspired by the complexities of scrambled genes, biologists and mathematicians have worked together to write this cross-disciplinary book,“Computation in Living Cells: Gene Assembly in Ciliates”. The book gives a rigorous mathematical and computational approach to study the mechanisms of gene unscrambling from both a biological and computational standpoint. Some of the arguments may extend to recombination in general. The book is divided in four parts. The first two chapters contain biological background targeted mostly to computer scientists, a general overview of biological principles and an introduction to ciliate biology (and scrambled genes). These chapters are simple enough for non-biology major students to understand the basic concepts of ciliate biology and characteristics of scrambled genes, which are the essence of this book.
