The historical background to the interest in tannins, which has increased considerably over the last 15 years, is reviewed. The distribution of tannins in green plants is discussed in taxonomic terms and correlative evidence of ecological importance shown to be particularly difficult because of the co-occurrence of other factors important to animals, both vertebrates and invertebrates. A brief account of the chemistry is followed by some details on the potential modes of action, and the quantitative evaluation of tannins in plants is discussed. The biological activity of tannins on herbivores is covered in separate sections on vertebrates and arthropods. In both groups tannins seem to have detrimental effects, but probably these are more common in vertebrates. Some animals are inhibited from feeding, while many suffer poor growth if high concentrations occur in the diet. There is no definitive evidence for the mode of action being antidigestive. Deleterious effects include erosion of gut epithelia and toxicity from the breakdown products of hydrolyzable tannins. The review concludes with an overview and summary of potential roles of tannins in plants other than in defence against herbivores, and suggestions for research needs.
