Significant amounts of clay (<2 μm) fraction were found to be present in the coarse-size mechanical separates (2–50 μm and >50 μm) of fourteen soils, which represent seven taxonomic orders and have widely varying texture and properties and developed under different pedogenic environments. Multiple regression analyses of the data clearly show the amorphous Fe and Alorganic C-clay interaction in stabilizing the size separates. Furthermore, the “beta” coefficients obtained from the regression analyses have given an insight into the relative importance of the amorphous Fe and Al oxides, organic matter and clays in the stabilization of the mechanical separates.
