In Canada, unemployment rates typically vary across regions. Over the past four decades, the Atlantic provinces have displayed higher rates than the central provinces of Quebec and Ontario or the Western provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia. Along with factors such as cross-regional differences in general economic performance and wage growth, these unemployment disparities provide employees with the incentives to migrate or to become interprovincial employees, that is, to accept jobs in other provinces while maintaining residence in their home province.
