The solid-state structures of the linear-chain semiconductors K/sub 4/(Pt/sub 2/(P/sub 2/O/sub 5/H/sub 2/)/sub 4/X) x nH/sub 2/O (X = Cl, Br, I), abbreviated Pt/sub 2/Cl, Pt/sub 2/Br, and Pt/sub 2/O, have been studied. The X-ray crystal structures of Pt/sub 2/Cl at 300 and 22 K and of Pt/sub 2/Br at 19 K are reported. These structures show that Pt/sub 2/Cl is a composite of alternating units of Pt/sub 2/ and Pt/sub 2/Cl/sub 2/ with (AABCCB)/sub n/ translational symmetry. The X-ray structure of Pt/sub 2/Br, on the other hand, shows equivalent Pt-Pt bonds and two slightly different Pt-Br bonds. Raman data confirm the composite Pt/sub 2//Pt/sub 2/Cl/sub 2/ structure for Pt/sub 2/Cl and indicate that the Pt/sub 2/Br species is comprised of dimeric units with nearly equal Pt-Pt bonds. The Pt/sub 2/Br structure is viewed as involving a slight distortion from idealized (AAB)/sub n/ toward (AABCCB)/sub n/ translational symmetry. Structural studies of Pt/sub 2/I were attempted; however, all crystals were twinned. Magnetic susceptibility, microwave conductivity, ESCA, and reflectance spectroscopy measurements are reported for Pt/sub 2/Br; the material is a semiconductor, with sigma = 10/sup -3/ Omega/sup -1/ cm/sup -1/ at 300 K, a bandgap of 0.08 eV, and a bandwidth greatermore » than 0.05 eV.« less
