There are four general types of corolla-structure in the genus Pedicularis, the toothless, the toothed, the beaked, and the long-tubed. Similar forms of corolla may rise from several entirely unrelated stocks, while closely related spp. may bear widely different forms of corolla. It is evident that the various forms of corolla have developed along repeated and independent lines. This variation in corolla-form is apparently the result of adaptive responses.
