A rapid optical technique is described for measuring the length of cultured embryonic chicken lens epithelial cells. This method is shown to be easy to use and to provide an accurate measure of lens cell lengthin vitro. Cell culture methods are described and examples are given of the application of these methods to the study of lens fiber cell differentiation.
