This paper presents a method of determing numerical scores for the categories of subjective scales. The scores so determined enable subjective data to be analysed by standard statistical methods based upon assumptions of normal distribution theory. The precise procedure depends upon an iterative solution but for most practical purposes an approximate solution is adequate. Two examples demonstrating the application of the procedure and the adequacy of the approximation are given.
