Any attempt to offer a specific interpretation of the course of social and political change in present-day Latin America must necessarily be projected from some historically significant moment which will help to give meaning to what happens later. Although such a moment may in many respects be arbitrary, particularly as regards the manner in which it relates to the wide diversity of real situations, there is no doubt that it is indispensable if the aim-as in this study-is to investigate the origins and courses of the structural processes leading to the present crisis of domination found in most of the Latin American region. 1
