Susceptibility of the white rat to the toxic properties of intravenously administered living typhus rickettsiae is reported. Evidence is presented which shows that the toxicity is due specifically to living typhus rickettsiae and is similar to the phenomenon in white mice. In repeated titrations of the toxic dose for rats as compared with mice, it was shown that the white rat is as susceptible as the mouse on a body weight basis to acute toxicity with epidemic typhus rickettsiae, but more resistant than the mouse to toxicity with rickettsiae of murine typhus. Gross pathologic changes were observed in the small intestine of white rats dying of acute rickettsial toxicity.
