The law of heterogeneous summation asserts that a whole is equal to the sum of its parts. Gestalt psychology asserts that a whole is greater than the sum of its parts. There is evidence to show that in lower animals, at least, Gestalt's, evolve from ‘heterogeneous summations’, in both phylogenetic and ontogenetic evolution. Two experiments are performed which show that this kind of shift occurs in the development of human infants. The results shed some light on the origins of Gestalt perception.
