A predicate logicis said to have theexistence property(EP), if for every,implies that there exists an individual variablevsuch that. A logicis said to have thedisjunction property(DP), if for everyAand everyB,implies eitheror. Sinceis regarded as the generalized, a natural question arises:Does EP imply DP?In 1987, Ono posed this as a problem in the context of intermediate predicate logics. This problem, known as Ono’s problemP52, has remained open for 25 years. In the present paper, we provide a negative solution to this problem by constructing counterexamples. For this purpose, we use thequantifier-annihilation axiomZ:. AlthoughZis an “abnormal” axiom, it plays an important role in our construction. We also introduce a condition (Z-normality) that excludes this “abnormal”Zand is a natural condition for reasonable logics. We show that EP implies DP forZ-normal logics. This result suggests a reason why Ono’s problemP52has remained open.
