Blocking the circulation to both legs by means of inflated cuffs around the thighs (pressure 300 mm.Hg.) lowered the resting metabolism by about 10%. This 10% apparently corresponded to the normal resting metabolism of the lower extremities, and after an estimation of the wt. of the muscles of the legs the resting metabolism of human muscles was found to be 1.7 cc. O2 per kg./min. or 0.5 Cal. per kg./hr. During work on the bicycle it was found that 50% of the extra O2 intake was utilized by the legs, and it was calculated that during the hardest work investigated (1080 kg./min.) the metabolism of the muscles was 112 cc. O2 per kg./min., i.e., an increase to 64 times the resting value. By extrapolation it was found that during maximal work the O2-intake of human muscles increased more than 100 times their resting metabolism. The circulation of blood through maximally working muscles must correspondingly be increased by at least 50 times the resting circulation.
