ABSTRACT We focus on the behaviour of strong solutions of the primitive system when the Rossby number goes to zero. We show that, under strong enough regularity assumptions, when the Rossby number is small enough, the solution of the primitive system is unique and global, and that it converges strongly to the solution of the quasigeostrophic system which is also unique and global, without any assumption of smallness of the initial data.
