Two-dimensional X-ray patterns may be imaged by coupling the X-ray induced luminescence of thin phosphor screens to a CCD. Because the phosphor image and the CCD may differ in size, it is often necessary to couple the two via magnifying or reducing mechanisms, i.e., to alter the format of the coupling. It is shown that when format alteration is accomplished by a lens, the combined lens transfer and phosphor conversion efficiencies limit the reduction of the image to 0.5−0.1×. Light scattering in the lens and reflection of light from the CCD yield a signal dependent background which limits the useful dynamic range for quantitative imaging. Although these limitations can be overcome by the use of fiberoptic reducing bundles, currently available fiberoptic reducing bundles introduce image distortions which are unacceptable for many applications. A third method of format alteration involves the insertion of reducing image intensifiers between the phosphor and the CCD; however, imperfections in the electron optics of practical intensifiers also introduce distortions and a signal dependent background. Various hybrid systems are evaluated.
