Awn traits of rice, which marked by awn length and distributive characteristic, are involved in its domestication.Correlation and QTL analysis on awn length(AL) and awn distributive characteristic(percentage of awned spikelets per panicle,AP) in rice were conducted in two locations(Shanghai and Hainan,China) using 182 backcross recombinant inbred lines(BILs)derived from Koshihikari(awnless)/ Kasalath(awned)// Koshihikari. The results of this study showed that there existed significantly positive correlations between the two traits studied.A total of twelve QTLs controlling the two awn traits were detected and located in seven genomic regions on six chromosomes, respectively, which could explain 2.90%~53.24% of total phenotypic variance.Kasalath alleles in most of the QTLs had increasing effects, whereas three QTLs from awnless Koshihikari increase the traits. What brought such a result was discussed. The QTLs detected and the tightly linked molecular markers would be useful in further studies of rice domestication and molecular assistant breeding for awnless ideal varieties.
